Improves Staff Efficiency and Resident Care with SARA

Description

Luther Village on the Park is a vibrant retirement community located in Waterloo, Ontario. Luther Village offers independent living, assisted living, long-term care and memory care services to approximately 500 residents.  It gives residents maximum independence and choice, a safe community rich with activity, and peace of mind knowing a continuum of care is available with an on-site assisted living facility.

Opportunity

Luther Village was facing challenges with an outdated emergency response system; specifically they were having difficulty finding replacement parts for the failing system. The management team at Luther Village began the search for a non-proprietary, stable solution that would improve alerting across the multi-building campus.

Solution

Status Solutions’ Situational Awareness and Response Assistant (SARA) replaced the emergency response system in place at Luther Village. All of Luther Village’s residents are equipped with wireless pendants, and SARA’s Positioning System (SPS) was implemented to provide accurate location information. The staff of approximately 50 is alerted via pager of appropriate events.

Through SPS, a patent-pending vector-mapping technology, SARA provides highly accurate location data. The location information provided to staff shows the proximity of the mobile user to a fixed device or virtual point of interest that can be as accurate as to the apartment. This level of accuracy is not available with traditional RF-based systems and has proved to help improve response times. 

According to John Baird, Status Solutions co-founder and lead developer of this innovative capability, “SPS is the process of SARA automatically creating a multi-dimensional model of the EchoStream RF Infrastructure on the property. The model consists of both fixed devices such as pull cords, wall mounted pendants, smoke detectors, etc., and virtual points of interest within the community. When a resident activates a mobile device, SARA mathematically compares the location of the mobile resident in question to the model and provides the closest positions.” 

SARA has provided Luther Village with an updated emergency response solution with the power of SPS. Luther Village has created approximately 400 points of interest and already experienced improved alarm response times due to the system’s location and alerting capabilities.

Partnership

With Status Solutions as a long-term technology provider, Luther Village is considering expanding the SARA solution to include Zone Monitoring when it becomes generally available, as well integrating video surveillance capabilities.

Summary

Luther Village was quickly able to deploy a new emergency response system to meet immediate alerting needs, while also addressing the needs of residents.  SPS promotes freedom and mobility and at the same time permits staff to provide a more efficient and better level of care. The nursing staff at Luther Villageq uickly adopted the easy-to-use system, and likewise residents easily adapted to new personal wireless pendants and pull cords throughout common areas of the campus.
